The user was expected to never have to adjust their machines, and let service providers do so when needed.

Youll turn it, and it will make the ribbon vibrator "oscillate", rising more or less per keystroke in a sine-wave fashion. It was designed so that all of an all black ribbon would be used during normal operation, instead of needing to click between "red" and "black" on the ribbon selectorWords are Wingedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07427885896085053444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2155655733060090741.post-27083792738419159442015-09-10T20:47:53.750-07:002015-09-10T20:47:53.750-07:00I hadn't seen lever adjusters before and was p...I hadn't seen lever adjusters before and was puzzled by them. Was the casual operator supposed to adjust the individual levers to taste or was that a specialized adjustment made by typewriter maintenance/repair persons? Note to self: get Underwood 5.

I am missing my nickeled ribbon oscillator knob. I was wondering what that was called since it wasn't notated in Fox standard diagrams I have seen. What does it do? Are you supposed to rotate it or pull it in and out?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2155655733060090741.post-56510613456173273252015-09-10T20:09:48.100-07:002015-09-10T20:09:48.100-07:00I'm glad you found it interesting! The Fox Portable was only designed and released after a large toss of in Fox management that started with Mr. Fox himself leaving the company. Same century though.

Also, you've quite the eye for spotting issues. The ribbon vibrator is, indeed, on the most troublesome functions on these guys. Out of 5 Fox Portables I posses (counting when my No. 2 was still whole), 3 of them had issues raising the ribbon correctly. Its such a simple system, yet has so many problems.

The desktop Fox's are very well crafted, and quirky in their own way (such as, as you mentioned, the almost afterthought ribbon vibrator). The individual lever adjustments can be found on other machines, such as Underwood 5s, but you will notice that the nickeled knob on the left side is a ribbon oscillator, something unique to the Fox. Try it out sometime with a black and red ribbon in to see!Words are Wingedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07427885896085053444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2155655733060090741.post-68991920706827501152015-09-10T19:16:31.838-07:002015-09-10T19:16:31.838-07:00I meant to type "individually adjustable key ...I meant to type "individually adjustable key levers" not "type levers".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2155655733060090741.post-70114643742449863292015-09-10T19:04:25.310-07:002015-09-10T19:04:25.310-07:00I was working on my Fox No. 24 this evening, tryin...I was working on my Fox No. 24 this evening, trying to spot similarities between my Fox standard and your Fox portable. I didn't see much in common. It's almost as if the two machines were made by different companies in different countries in different centuries.

The Fox No. 24 is so strange - seems over-engineered and very primitive at the same time. It has this incredibly crazy and complex typebar set up - but the ribbon vibrator looks like an afterschool craft project. I think that's what I love about this funny machine: strange mechanics. I am now becoming acquainted with the individually adjustable type levers. This machine is rich and nutty.

By comparison, the mechanics of your Fox portable look sleek and efficient and modern. Except for your ribbon feed - that piece of springy metal seems a bit iffy. Is it reliable?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2155655733060090741.post-46092766694388704282015-09-10T17:46:48.628-07:002015-09-10T17:46:48.628-07:00Indeed epic!
