If I recall (from having worked for a Swiss company and with many Swiss) all males in Switzerland are required to serve 2 years and are then in the active reserve into middle age and everyone is ready to defend the country. Even many women serve in the military. Then in the USA our government has left the military fall apart. Not everyone thinks like President Regan.
Switzerland has one of the most impressive defense networks I have ever seen. Fortresses and tunnels all throughout the mountains, with artillery and explosives at the ready. I've heard the same regarding their mandatory military service.
My 17-year-old daughter is a big fan of the Federalist Papers and has an idea of rewriting them in contemporary English so that they're accessible to everyone. Not a bad idea!
I will admit, I sometimes keep a dictionary nearby when I'm reading the Federalist Papers. I personally prefer reading the original text, and soak in the elegance of it all. However, I know considerably more people who are turned away by the style they were written in, so a more contemporary version would certainly get more people interested.
